Following the success of Harden Players’ return to stage after the pandemic closures in March with the fantastic Treasure Island, it was difficult to imagine a production for the autumn that would once again capture the spirit of community and fun previously so evident in the group. Hi-de-Hi exceeded all expectations, however, and we were so pleased to see familiar faces, as well as some welcome new ones, in the audiences over the middle two weekends of October. It was particularly exciting to have a debut director, John Hamilton, at the helm, supported by Players’s stalwarts Sheila Shenton as musical director and Jackie Smith as stage manager. John had only ever been on stage once previously, as a stand-in during Treasure Island, so it was brilliant to see the enthusiasm for the group – and for putting on a fab production – so evident in new members.
An almost decade-long run on our TV screens during the 80s, Hi-de-Hi’s 1959 setting in an English holiday camp was evocative for a whole host of ages, and it was great to introduce some of the music and fashion of the time to younger audience members! The cast were not only phenomenal in role, (particularly a couple of actors taking their first principal roles!) but had the best time rehearsing and performing; definitely one for the memory banks. Our thanks to John and the team for pulling together such a wonderful show.
